The Orphanage announced as official Spanish selection for 80th Academy Awards®

NEW YORK, September 27, 2007 — Picturehouse is proud to announce that Juan Antonio Bayona’s debut feature, The Orphanage, has been selected as the official Spanish entry for the 2008 Foreign Language Academy Award®.

The supernatural drama, which prompted outstanding reactions during outings at both Cannes and Toronto, is being brought to the big screen by producer Guillermo Del Toro and will open on December 28th. The Orphanage will also screen this Saturday, the 29th, at the 45th New York Film Festival. The good news of the submission comes hot on the heels of Del Toro’s success at last year’s awards where his acclaimed masterpiece, Pan’s Labyrinth, picked up six nominations and three wins including Best Cinematography.

“This is a project we have been anticipating for quite some time and it's one we’re extremely excited about,” said Bob Berney, President of Picturehouse. “Everyone involved is absolutely delighted by the announcement.”

“I’m pleased that we have found a great home for The Orphanage at Picturehouse and it continues what has been a very fruitful relationship,” Del Toro added. “It’s a great achievement for Bayona who has worked tirelessly to realize his vision.”

Set by the sea, a woman returning to her cherished childhood home stumbles upon a dark secret after she discovers that her adopted son, Simón, has made himself “imaginary” friends. The Orphanage is a superbly atmospheric and emotionally powerful tale of love, loss and guilt, featuring a fearless performance from award-winning Spanish actress Belén Rueda. It is slated to hit theaters December 28th.

Launched in April 2005, Picturehouse is the joint venture of two leaders of the entertainment community - HBO and New Line Cinema.
