NEW YORK, May 25th, 2006 — Picturehouse has acquired the U.S. rights to La Vie En Rose, the dramatic real-life story of French chanteuse Edith Piaf starring Marion Cotillard (Ridley Scott’s A Good Year, A Very Long Engagement), as Piaf, and Gerard Depardieu as Louis Leplée. It was announced today by Bob Berney, president of Picturehouse.
A Legende and TF1 production, La Vie En Rose is the much anticipated film written and directed by Oliver Dahan (Crimson Rivers 2, The Little Tom Thumb) and produced by Ilan Goldman (Legende) the producer of Crimson Rivers 1 and 2 and 1492.
The film follows Piaf’s rise from the slums of Paris to the limelight of New York all the while struggling with her passionate romances and relationships with some of the greatest names of that time.
“Edith Piaf led an amazing and very cinematic life,” said Berney. “Oliver has done a tremendous job of capturing her spirit and Marion Cotillard transforms herself into the embodiment of Edith Piaf.”
“We are very happy to work with Picturehouse and its passionate team. We are excited about their enthusiasm for the film and we are sure that they will achieve a great US release for La Vie En Rose,” said Dahan.
The deal was brokered on behalf of Picturehouse by Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, Sara Rose and by Carolyn Blackwood, Executive Vice President of Business Affairs and Co-Productions, New Line and negotiated on behalf of the film by Nicolas Eschbach, Executive Vice President of World Sales at TF1 International. Alexandra Rossi, Vice President of European/Latin American acquisitions and Co-Productions, based out of New Line’s London offices, tracked the project and brought it to the attention of Berney and Rose.
Premiering this Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival, in competition, is Picturehouse’s fairy tale Pan’s Labyrinth written and directed by Gullermo del Toro (Hellboy, Blade 2, The Devil’s Backbone).
Launched in April 2005, Picturehouse is the joint venture of two leaders of the entertainment community - HBO and New Line Cinema. Upcoming films include Robert Altman’s A Prairie Home Companion based on Garrison Keillor’s legendary radio variety show and starring Keillor (as himself), with Academy Award-winners Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Tommy Lee Jones, Academy Award-nominees Lily Tomlin, John C.
